Head of the Class

As I mentioned previously, I started my new photography class this week. I feel compelled to add that it’s also my first photography class; everything I’ve learned up until this point has been at work, the Internet and books. I think I’ve done OK but I’d like to learn more, to improve my photography skills and take my pictures to another level — hence the class.

I tend to get a little anxious about entering new situations, so I was a little unsettled going into class for the first time.  Maybe five people were already there, out of a class of  12. I chose a seat in the back of the room so I could get a straight-on view of the front. I was a few minutes early, so I read a magazine I’d brought in with me to pass the time.
I chose to skip the first class and go straight for the second level — Digital 102 — because I figured my skills were at least equal to there. Once the instructor started, I was certain I’d made the right choice. While some of the things he covered were not new to me — I already shoot in RAW and manual mode — he also talked about some settings and features on my camera that previously were unexplored. After the nearly two-hour class ended, I felt like I’d acquired some useful tips I could immediately apply.

For my next class, I even have homework! I have to share two photographs that illustrate either one or two of the words on this list:

  • fast
  • slow
  • lost
  • found
  • soft
  • new
  • old
  • open
  • together
  • alone
  • wild
  • isolation
  • shadows
  • water
  • light
  • space
  • time
  • color
  • mood
  • tension (conflict)
  • freedom

I have some ideas already but have not yet taken any pictures (dealing with pukey baby took precedence yesterday). Hoping to change that in the next couple of days, provided my kids cooperate.

Oh, I loved my photography class in college…it really pushes you to do things you didn’t even know were possible! Have tons of fun with it!

Please make sure you post photos on your blog and at flickr. I’d LOVE to see and sort of follow along. 🙂

Very cool to try new situations. We kind of get out of the habit after we get out of school, huh? I just started swimming laps for exercise and felt the same way on day 1. I know how to swim, but have never swam laps. It went fine, though, and I’m sure no one’s looking at me. :o) Sounds like you’ll have fun in our class!
